Drug trafficker Emre Kumova jailed for ten years
A MELBOURNE man who trafficked more than 13kg of amphetamines as part of a large drug ring has been jailed for 10 years.
Emre Kumova, 27, was a "major player" in the amphetamines trafficking operation and in 2009 travelled with a number of associates to Hong Kong to source pseudoephedrine, the Victorian County Court heard today.
Between November 2009 and March 30, 2010, he trafficked 13.72kg of amphetamines.
On his arrest, 4.76kg of the drug was found in his four-wheel-drive, the court heard.
The drug was of 10 per cent purity.
Kumova made 200 telephone calls relating to the trafficking over the four-month period, the court heard.
Judge Chris O'Neill said the court had heard Kumova was a "major player" in the drug operation and had played a "significant role".
He said the 13kg Kumova trafficked was 13 times the amount required for a person to be charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity.
Judge O'Neill said the legislation paid no regard to the purity of the drugs.
He said Kumova did not use the drugs to fund an extravagant lifestyle.
Kumova had no prior convictions and was a youthful offender, Judge O'Neill said.
Kumova began drug trafficking to support his own drug habit, the court heard.
He jailed Kumova, who pleaded guilty to trafficking a large commercial quantity of amphetamines, for 10 years and ordered he serve seven and a half years before being eligible for parole.
Kumova, formerly of the Melbourne suburb of Skye, has already served more than a year in custody.
