Visitors to a posh London bakery have been outraged when they discover the cookies cost £25. The West London spot is said not to have menu prices on display.
Cédric Grolet at The Berkeley is the famous pastry chef's first patisserie outside of Paris. It opened at the London hotel earlier this year.
Cédric Grolet is said to be one of the world's greatest patissiers, winning several titles over the years. But his London spot has been causing controversy with it's quite literally priceless pastries and offerings.
The café like patisserie with bougie looking seating and decor in Knightsbridge is primarily popular for its afternoon tea, Goûter, or taster. For £85, this includes sweet and savoury bites and a cookie.
However, this menu is one of the only things guests can find the price for at Cédric Grolet. On social media, the patisserie has recently gone viral as users are shocked to be charged so highly for seemingly simple purchases.
In one TikTok, users were shocked as they found their mint tea was £9, which they described as "daylight robbery". Joining that, a seemingly simple cookie they had purchased was a whole £25. As many other users have done, they filmed the pretty-pastry filled counter and said: "You know never to trust somewhere that doesn't have the prices or a menu out. So it had all these beautiful products but had no idea how much anything was."
Trying the rather pricey cookie, they concluded: "This was a good cookie but it wasn't amazing." In the comments users said: "The way my jaw dropped," and "£25 is birthday cake territory." And one also wrote: "You were ripped off."
And one even wrote on Twitter: "I just watched a tiktok of the most expensive bakery in London where a mint tea is £9 and a single cookie is 25 great british pounds. Sometimes I think London is just a social experiment to see how far they can go with overpricing things and get away with it."
